ESL StudentsESL Bible Studies
ESL (English as a second language) Bible Studies are a practical way to demonstrate the love of Messiah Jesus to immigrants who are struggling to learn English. Many newcomers to Canada feel confused and isolated in their new home. Often, they find themselves in the lowest socio-economic bracket. It can be a difficult and humbling experience to start out anew, far away from family, friends, and all things familiar.

As a result of these trying circumstances, in the providence of God, some immigrants are awakened to their spiritual need. As these struggling souls come to grips with their linguistic, cultural, and economic deficiencies, they also begin to recognize their overall human condition. The Gospel message that speaks of God's power to transform the weak and save the sinner resonates in their hearts powerfully.

Through the combination of English and Bible teaching, we are able to minister to people in a deep, holistic way. In Jesus' name, we open the door to the English language and Canadian culture. Also, in Jesus' name, we open the door to heaven and the throne of grace. Then, when an immigrant comes to accept the Lord, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in his or her heart, hope takes root, new life is imparted, joy is multiplied! Jesus says, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10). ESL Bible Studies help people experience that abundant life.

Within the Jewish community, there is a steady stream of new immigration from Russia and Eastern Europe. Most of these Jewish people are in need of ESL help. Also, many are open and curious when it comes to philosophical and religious discussions. Through our ESL Bible Studies, we hope to offer genuine, practical assistance with language-learning as well as the message of the divine Helper, Healer, and Friend.

In our ESL Bible Studies, students from a range of nationalities learn using the English Bible as their text book. Our custom-designed ciriculum teaches basic, everyday English skills as we open up the Word of God. Emphasis is placed on acquiring listening, pronunciation, speaking, and writing skills, as well as Bible knowledge.

Our weekly class in the Jewish community of North York has recently come to a close. We have had students from China, Ecuador, the Ukraine, and Russia. One other weekly class continues to be taught in downtown Toronto with immigrants from mainland China. If you would like more information about this aspect of our ministry at New Covenant House, visit our ESL Bible Study web site.

Let us not forget the words of Scripture: "The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God" (Leviticus 19:34).
